Studio Policies & Guidelines

Welcome to Ceramics on 10th! All students must familiarize themselves with our studio policies and expectations before beginning their pottery journey.

Getting Started

Come Prepared for Mess! Clay is messy – wear clothes and shoes you're okay with getting dirty.

Tools & Equipment:

  • Basic tools and aprons are provided, but we encourage students to purchase their own for better quality non communal items

  • Use towels only for drying hands – use sponges for cleanup

  • Place dirty towels in the designated dirty clothes bin

Glazes & Materials:

  • Studio glazes are provided for all students

  • Important: Do not mix wet glazes together. If double-dipping with different glazes, allow the first coat to dry completely

  • Personal underglazes, washes, glazes and slips may be used at the studio (must be rated for cone 6 or higher)

  • All outside products require teacher/technician/Julie approval

  • Always make a test tile to assess runniness

Additional Fees

Clay
Students must purchase their own clay to use in the studio. We do this so that the studio can have a diversity of clays plus you learn more about the full process maintaining your own materials. We sell six different clay bodies at cost, we do not make a profit on clay. You can also buy and use your own clay as long as its rated for cone six or higher.

Grinding Services
Not available.

Enrollment & Attendance

  • Full semester commitment required – no prorating available

  • No refunds for missed classes

  • No make-up classes – use open studio time instead

Firing Process

Create your account at: potterynyc.kilnfire.com/new-user

Pricing & Measurements

  • Rate: $0.03 per cubic inch per firing

  • Minimums: 3" minimum size, $1 minimum charge

  • Calculation: Length × Width × Height × $0.03

  • Take the longest length and widest width and height and enter those numbers into the kiln fire widget, they will round numbers and calculate fees for you.

Note that pieces that are not measured correctly will be rejected and you will have to pay the difference before the works will be approved for firing, Skip the hassle and measure correctly the first time.

Firing Rules

  • Bisque firing: Pieces may be stacked/filled

  • Glaze firing: Each piece needs individual ticket

  • Incorrect measurements = no firing

  • Dangerous pieces (glaze on bottom) go to TLC shelf

  • We don't stilt works – clean bottoms or provide your own stilts

  • Custom stilting requires firing tray (fee must include the entire area that the piece plus the firing tray take up.

Pickup Policy

  • Finished work available 1-2 weeks after final class

  • 2-week grace period (total pickup window: 1-4 weeks)

Studio Etiquette

Respect Others' Space

  • Don't access other students' shelves without permission

  • Don't use others' personal items (label your belongings!)

  • Look but don't touch other students' work

Special notes on cleanup

The cleanup process will be explained by your instructor. Cleanup by using water in a bucket and a sponge at your wheel station. Clean all tools and equipment this manner in that way the sink remains open for dumping and rinsing of buckets and minimal Clay will get down the drain. Darker Clays may require multiple cleanings and water changes.

Safety First

  • No dry sanding or dry trimming (creates hazardous particles)

  • Clean all tools and return them to proper locations

  • Don't store common studio tools on your personal shelf - this includes studio buckets

Documentation

  • Always sign your work

  • Take photos when dropping off pieces for firing

Broken Piece Policy

Accidents happen! If you accidentally break another student's work:

  1. Notify the studio immediately

  2. Offer to replace materials and firing fees

  3. When in doubt, ask a teacher email us for help

Prevention: Handle only your own work when moving pieces or accessing firing shelves.
