STUDIO RULES & POLICIES

By enrolling in a Ceramics on 10th class and/or using Open Studio, you explicitly agree to all the information, deadlines, and rules found on this page. Please read through these terms carefully before registering.

1. Firing Fees & Measuring

  • Pricing & Responsibility: Firing is billed at $0.03 per cubic inch, per firing. Students are entirely responsible for all of their own firing fees.

  • Accuracy: All work must be measured accurately. Mis-measured work will be rejected.

  • Rejection Protocol: If a piece is rejected, you must request a cancellation on the system before re-measuring and re-submitting your work.

  • System Portals: Register your firing account here: https://potterynyc.kilnfire.com/new-user Manage your dashboard here: https://potterynyc.kilnfire.com/dashboard

2. Studio Provisions & Attendance

  • What Ceramics on 10th Provides: Instruction during scheduled class times, use of the studio during your class time, and open studio access (see schedules below).

  • What Students Provide: Students must provide their own clay for the term (clay is available for purchase through the studio).

  • Class Schedule: Mon–Thu: 6:30 PM – 9:30 PM

    Sat: 11:00 AM – 2:00 PM

  • No Make-Up Classes: There are absolutely no make-up classes. Please do not register if you expect to miss more classes than you feel is worth the studio access. Remember that your open studio time is unlimited.

3. 24/7 Open Studio Privileges

  • Availability: Open Studio is accessible 24/7 at any time when a formal class is not actively in session.

  • Security & Access: Always ensure the door closes completely and securely behind you when entering or leaving the building. If you are the first person to arrive or the last person to leave, you may be responsible for raising or lowering the studio security gate.

4. Clay Delivery & Management

  • Shelf Delivery: Purchased clay is delivered directly to your enrolled student shelf within 3 days. You must clear space on your shelf before ordering to ensure there is room. If you have not received your clay within one week of ordering, email the studio with your order number.

  • Inventory Respect: Never open clay boxes or take clay from the glaze corner without explicit permission. Our physical stock matches our online inventory; the clay you see may already be purchased by another student.

  • Clay Waste & Reclaim: Students maintain their own clay supply, but we ask that you never throw clay away. If you have clay you no longer want, please donate it to the studio reclaim system. If you absolutely must discard clay, do not leave it in the trash can—email us so we can arrange to donate it.

5. Glaze & Materials Policies

  • Glaze Hygiene: Stir and mix glazes thoroughly before use. If a glaze appears contaminated or "off," inform a staff member immediately.

  • No Dilution: Do not add water to or remove water from studio glazes.

  • Contamination Prevention: Never contaminate a glaze with another color. Only dip pieces into a glaze layer if the underlying glaze coat is completely dry.

  • Outside Materials: Outside clay and glazes are allowed only if they are clearly labeled and rated to Cone 6+. We strongly suggest you make test tiles before firing outside materials on communal shelves.

6. Required Cleaning Protocol

  • Station Cleanliness: You must leave no trace of clay behind. Clean your station and the surrounding floor area thoroughly, including the wheel, wheel basin, stool, and splash pan as needed.

  • Communal Spaces: Clean any shared areas you utilize, including the wedging tables, sinks, glaze tables, and front drying areas.

  • Plaster Care: Wedge and return clay properly. Wipe down the wedging plaster when finished; never leave raw clay sitting on the plaster boards.

  • Tool Return: Put away all studio tools, tiles, slips, and plaster boards in their designated homes.

  • Final Class Clean-Out: On your very last class of the semester, you must completely clean and clear your shelf if you are not continuing into the next term.

7. Term Deadlines & Inter-Term Transitions If you are not continuing into the next consecutive semester, you must strictly adhere to the term firing deadlines:

  • Week 6: The final week to work wet clay (throwing or hand-building new work).

  • Week 7: The final week to trim your pieces.

  • Week 8: The final week to glaze your work.

  • Shelf Relocation: Student shelves are grouped by class. If you change classes between terms, your shelf will be relocated. To avoid property damage, clear all works in progress from your shelves between terms if you know you are switching days/classes.

  • Move-Out Dates: Non-continuing students must completely move out by the last day of their specific class, which may differ from the official last day of the standard semester.

  • Inter-Term Access: Only students registered for the following term are permitted to use Open Studio during the break between semesters. Note that the studio may occasionally close between terms for modeling, renovations, and deep cleaning.

  • Name Discrepancies: If the name you register under differs from the name written on your shelf tag, you must communicate this directly to the studio to ensure your shelf be maintained between terms.

8. Studio Safety & Equipment

  • Dust Control & Sanding: No dry sanding is permitted indoors. Dry sanding must be done entirely outdoors, at least 20 feet away from the studio building, while wearing appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE). Wet sanding is permitted indoors.

  • Equipment Training: Do not use advanced studio equipment (such as drills, heat guns, etc.) unless you have received formal training. Any property damage resulting from misuse may be charged directly to the student.

  • Kilns and basement - Please do not ever touch the kilns and firing equipment (shelves, kiln furnature) for any reason, if you have deadlines or concerns please email us or speak to the studio technician.

9. Personal Property & Food Policies

  • Property Respect: Do not touch, borrow, or use another student's tools or shelf items without explicit permission. Store your items exclusively on your assigned shelf; if your items do not fit, you must take them home.

  • Liability: The studio is not liable for any lost or stolen items.

  • Pick-Up Window: Finished work is held for exactly 3 weeks after the term ends. After 3 weeks, unclaimed work may be donated or discarded.

  • Food Policy: Please do not eat inside the studio. Consume all lunches, meals, and snacks prior to coming into the space.

10. Cancellations & Refunds

  • Deadline: A full refund requires a formal cancellation request submitted at least 1 week prior to the first scheduled class.

  • No Post-Start Refunds: Absolutely no refunds will be issued once classes have officially begun for the term.

  • How to Request: All cancellation requests must be sent via email to pnyc786@gmail.com. Please include your order number in the email to expedite processing.
