Colored Clay (8-Week Course | 6–8pm)

Clay is an exciting, creative medium—and adding color makes it even more fun. In this course, you’ll learn the fundamentals of mixing and preparing your own colored clay, then how to throw it on the wheel to create beautiful color effects. We’ll discuss traditional approaches including nerikomi, neriage, agateware, scroddleware, and Nemadji, plus wheel throwing, select handbuilding techniques, mason stains, and porcelain—all in one term.
Week 1: Mixing primary + shading colors (no wheel time)
Week 2: Throwing on the potter’s wheel
Week 3: Color Part II — secondary + custom colors
Week 4: Stacking vs. inlay vs. spiral
Week 5: Nerikomi + laminating the cylinder; trimming
Week 6: Bisque deadline (if overglazing)
Week 7: Glazing (or naked clay)
Week 8: Final class wrap-up; all fired work ready for pickup one week later
Students are assigned their own shelf for the duration of the course
Open studio is included
Materials provided at the start of term: 25 lbs of clay + four (4) quarter-pound stains
Students who need additional clay must purchase their own
Firing fees are extra: $0.03 per cubic inch, per firing
